Aboriginal Possum Skin Cloaks traditionally started out as small enough to wrap a baby and skins were added as a person grew, so their cloaks grew with them. timita payakati holds the story of the Old People, and the stories of lutruwita told through ochre, fibres and fire.

 
 

1. Prizes/Awards

The WOMEN’S ART PRIZE TASMANIA (The Prize) is the state’s only female art competition which aims to inspire, facilitate and celebrate the development of professional and emerging women artists in Tasmania. RANT ARTS LTD (RANT) is proud to manage and present this project alongside its longstanding partner: RIO TINTO BELL BAY ALUMINIUM and new presenting partners: MADELINE GORDON GALLERY, PROJECT GALLERY 90 and TAILORED SERVICES for the ARTS.

The 2024 prize includes the following categories:

  • lutruwita Prize - presented by Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium: $10,000

  • Women’s Art Prize Tasmania - presented by RANT Arts:  $10,000

  • Early Career Artist Prize - presented by Tailored Services for the Arts: $5,000

  • People’s Choice Award - presented jointly by Madeline Gordon Gallery and Project Gallery 90: $2,000

THE 2024 WOMEN’S ART PRIZE TASMANIA OPENS FOR SUBMISSIONS ON THURSDAY 23 NOVEMBER 2023.

 

2. Key Dates

 
  • Entries close: 11:59pm (ADST Australia), Monday 29 January 2024.

  • The Public Announcement of the 25 FINALISTS will be announced and confirmed online on Friday, 8 March 2024 (International Women’s Day).

  • FINALISTS must deliver their artworks either in person or by courier (at the artist’s cost) to RANT, 45-47 Stewart Street, Devonport between Wednesday 20 March 2024 and Friday 29 March 2024. FINALISTS must make contact via email to make arrangements: wapt@rantarts.com

  • Official openings of exhibition and announcement of prize-winners: 

    • Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, Launceston - Friday 3 May 2024, 6pm.
      Announcements: lutruwita Prize - presented by Bell Bay Aluminium (non-acquisitive) and 2024 Women’s Art Prize Tasmania - presented by RANT Arts

      Devonport Regional Gallery, Devonport - Friday 2 August 2024, 6pm.
      Announcement: Early Career Artist Prize  - presented by Tailored Services for the Arts

      Moonah Arts Centre, Moonah - Thursday 17 October 2024, 6pm.

  • Finalist exhibition dates: *Viewing times and terms of exhibitions can be found online via venue websites

  • Artworks must be collected at the conclusion of the final exhibition either in person or by courier (at the artist’s cost) from RANT, 45-47 Stewart Street, Devonport during business hours at the end of the exhibition tour (between Wednesday 15 November 2024 and Friday 1 December 2024).

 

3. Artworks

  • The Prize has no theme.

  • Artworks must be original.

  • All artworks must be available for the duration of the exhibition tour.

  • Artworks must not infringe the copyright and moral rights or any other right of any third party including in the case of video and new media works when the work is run, played or operated.

  • Artworks that have been previously exhibited are acceptable but must not have been exhibited in any previous awards or prizes.

  • Packed artworks’ dimensions must not exceed 120cm in any direction.

  • Once installed, the artwork’s wall and/or floor space must be under 200cm in all directions.

  • The combined weight of artworks and any display armature/furniture must not exceed 20kg.

  • For all screen-based works, ENTRANTS must contact RANT before submission to confirm availability of display elements on: wapt@rantarts.com . While every effort will be made to source display elements, including screens, media players etc. ENTRANTS may need to provide their own equipment to show their work should they be selected for exhibition.

  • It is the ENTRANT’s responsibility to have all electrical items over the age of 12 months tested and tagged before delivery. It is the policy of the Prize venues that works with untested & untagged electrical components will not be displayed with power on.

  • Artworks must be easily transportable for touring and must be able to be lifted by two people. i.e. to be able to fit in the Prize’s truck, artworks cannot be more than 120cm when packed.

  • It is the ENTRANT’s responsibility to ensure that:

    • their artwork is safely and securely packed into quality reuseable materials; (note: it is not acceptable to wrap solely in bubble wrap. )

    • the outside of the package is marked clearly with:

      • Women’s Art Prize Tasmania

      • artist’s name;

      • artist’s contact number;

      • the direction it should travel in (ie. which way up);

      • “FRAGILE”.

  • Artworks must be ready to install and fitted with hanging fixtures that are appropriate for the weight of the work, all 2D artworks must be fitted with D-rings.

  • Artworks may not be pinned to the wall.

4. Eligibility

  • The WOMEN’S ART PRIZE TASMANIA (The Prize) is open to Tasmanian residents (either citizens or those who have held permanent Australian resident status) who have held a Tasmanian residential address for at least 6 of the last 12 months in Tasmania preceding the Entry Closing Date of Monday 29 January 2024.

  • ENTRANTS must identify as being female.

  • RANT welcomes and encourages ENTRANTS who are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

  • Collaborative entries are eligible to enter if all collaborators/contributors identify as female.

  • All artworks submitted must be the original work of the ENTRANT and completed in the previous 12 months immediately preceding the Entry Close Date. (Refer to KEY DATES.)

  • All works must be wholly owned by the ENTRANT.

  • Multiple entries from an artist are acceptable, however a separate Entry Form and Entry Fee must be submitted and paid for EACH entry.

  • The lutruwita Prize is a dedicated award for an identified First Nations artist, cultural practitioner or cultural worker of any career stage. 

  • To be eligible for the Early Career Artist Prize ENTRANTS must be in the initial stage of their professional career, usually up to the first 8 years of their arts practice or new artform. To be considered for this prize category, ENTRANTS must check the Early Career artist option in the entry form.

  • ENTRANTS must submit a completed Entry Form and Entry Fee by 11:59pm (ADST) on Monday 29 January 2024. Entries received after this date will not be accepted.

  • ENTRANTS must comply with the Terms and Conditions outlined in this document. If the Terms and Conditions are not met, RANT reserves the right to refuse the entry. If entry is refused, the artists will not be entitled to a refund of their entry fee.

 

5. Entries

All Entries must be made online at: www.womensartprizetas.com.au

  • All Entries must include:

    • 1 page Artist CV;

    • 1 x Print-quality photograph of your artwork with a minimum resolution of 300 PPI (pixel per inch);

    • Label Information:

      • Artist Name

      • Collaborating Artists (if relevant)

      • Title of artwork

      • Year the work was created

      • Medium(s)

      • Dimensions in centimetres - vertical height (cm) x horizontal width (cm)  x depth (cm)

    • Artist Statement, up to 50 words; and

    • Artist Bio, up to 100 words.

  • Any assisting artists or technicians must be clearly identified and acknowledged in the Entry Form.

  • RANT reserves the right to refuse any ENTRIES if they are regarded as being unsuitable or culturally insensitive.

  • By completing the Entry Form and paying the Entry Fee, the ENTRANT agrees to these Terms and Conditions.

6. Entry fees

  • Each ENTRANT must pay an Entry Fee of $49.50 (gst inclusive) per artwork.

  • The Entry Fee is non-refundable.

  • Payment must be made securely online through PayPal during the application process.

  • RANT respects each ENTRANT’S privacy and will not store any payment details and will not share any information with a third party.

  • ENTRANTS will be issued a tax receipt through PayPal for each entry.

 

7. Judges Panel & Selection of Winners

  • The Judging Panel will comprise members possessing the appropriate credentials to make an informed and critical assessment of all the entries.

  • The Judging Panel will assess all entries and select 25 FINALISTS for exhibition.

  • The Juding Panel’s decision will be final and RANT will not engage in any correspondence regarding the judges’ decisions.

  • The Judging Panel will assess the 25 FINALISTS’ works once installed in the first exhibition venue to ascertain the winners.

  • Each FINALIST is eligible to win only one prize.

  • All ENTRANTS will be advised by RANT via email as to whether or not they have been shortlisted as a FINALIST.

  • The People’s Choice Award will be judged by the public via a paper ballot and announced at the last venue of the finalist exhibition. The winner will be advised by RANT via email.

  • Prize-winning ENTRANTS agree to make all reasonable efforts to attend the Prize Opening Events as follows:

    •  Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, Launceston - Friday 3 May 2024, 6pm.

    •  Devonport Regional Gallery, Devonport - Friday 2 August 2024, 6pm.

    • Moonah Arts Centre, Moonah - Thursday 17 October 2024, 5.30pm.

 
 

8. Insurance & Liability

 
  • RANT will take responsibility for works once they have taken possession.

  • RANT will insure works against loss and damage during the competition period (including handling, judging, storage, touring and exhibiting) until collection by the Artist.

  • While all due care will be taken, RANT will not accept responsibility for Artworks that are not packed in accordance with the specifications outlined in these Terms and Conditions.

 
 

9. Copyright & Moral Rights

 

  • RANT recognises that the authorship and copyright of the Artwork belongs to the Artist and that the Artist has the right to ensure their work is not used in any way that may be harmful to their honour or reputation as its creator. 

  • RANT will, to the best of its ability, make every effort to:

    • ensure that in all exhibitions, Artists are identified and attributed as the creator in respect of their works;

    • ensure that Artists have the right to stop another from being incorrectly credited as the creator of the artwork;

    • ensure no changes will be made to works when reproduced, without the Artist’s prior consent;

    • attribute the Artist as the creator of their work whenever their work is reproduced unless it is reasonable in the circumstances not to do so; and

    • ensure that nothing is done in relation to the Artist’s work that is prejudicial to the artist’s honour or reputation.

  • Only FINALISTS’ works will be exhibited and reproduced, and any reproduction will be in relation to The PRIZE. Reproduction is for print and online and includes: catalogues, media/promotion relating to the prize (social media, websites) and historical documentation purposes, relating to The PRIZE.

  • All FINALISTS will grant RANT a non-exclusive copyright licence to reproduce their entered works for a period of five years from the closing date of entries. Reproductions of their works will be used for exhibition catalogues and media/promotional material, and any reproductions will be related to The PRIZE, and will not be used for commercial purposes.

  • The WINNERS of The PRIZE categories will grant to RANT a non-exclusive, perpetual copyright licence to reproduce their winning Artwork for non-commercial purposes relating to The PRIZE, including archival purposes, in print and online. RANT will ensure:

    • attribution for the winning Artists as the creators of the work when exhibited and whenever the winning Artworks are reproduced, unless it is reasonable in the circumstances not to do so; 

    • no changes will be made to the winning Artworks when reproduced, without the winning Artists’ prior consent; and

    • that nothing is done in relation to the winning Artworks that is prejudicial to the winning Artists’ honour or reputation.

  • All copyright licences granted are for RANT only and not any sponsors or partners of The Prize.  

10. Non-Collection of Finalists Artwork

  • The non-acquired work of FINALISTS must be collected within 14 days of the closing date of the final exhibition venue (see KEY DATES).

  • Any artwork remaining uncollected as of midnight (ADST) Tuesday 31 December 2024* will be deemed abandoned unless alternative arrangements have been made between the Artist and RANT. *A notice will be sent to the Artist at the email address, phone number or postal address provided on the relevant application advising the Artist has a further 5 business days in which to collect the Artwork.

  • Any artwork remaining uncollected as Friday 31 January 2025 may be dealt with by RANT as it sees fit and may be retained as its absolute property or otherwise disposed of at any time (including by donation, sale or destruction).

11. General

  • Employees of RANT and those involved in the administration or judging of the prize and their families are not eligible to enter.

  • In the case of any intractable disputes arising that concern the administration of The Prize, all parties agree to enter into mediated negotiation. This mediation will be conducted through an agreed independent third party. If no such agreement can be reached, a mediator from the Australian Mediation Association must be employed before any litigation. RANT advises ENTRANTS that free and independent legal advice can be obtained from: Arts Law Centre of Australia ( www.artslaw.com.au ) and Australian Copyright Council (www.copyright.org.au ).

  • RANT will not be responsible for the sale of any works. Any sales enquiries will be directed to the artist or a representative they have nominated. 

  • RANT reserves all rights to refuse display of any entry that fails to meet all requirements outlined in the terms and Conditions, or any work it deems to be unacceptable for exhibition.

  • Force Majeure: Where RANT is unable to carry out its obligations under these terms due to circumstances beyond its control or which it could not have prevented, those obligations are suspended whilst those circumstances continue, provided the ENTRANTS are notified and RANT uses its best endeavours to overcome the circumstances preventing its obligations from being carried out.

  • RANT will ensure all information provided by ENTRANTS is secure and strictly confidential unless disclosure is required by law.

  • These Terms shall be construed and controlled by the laws of the State of Tasmania.
