These guidelines outline key information about the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania 2023 Fellowship program. Inside you will find:

• management, responsibilities, delivery and completion of Fellowship activities.

 You must read these guidelines before commencing an application.

2. About

Inspiring women’s art in Tasmania

 The Women’s Art Prize Tasmania is the state’s only female art competition. Administered and managed by RANT Arts and re-launched in 2018, the Prize aims to inspire, facilitate and celebrate the development of professional and emerging women artists in Tasmania. The Women’s Art Prize Tasmania seeks to inspire through:

• Identifying, promoting, encouraging and celebrating exceptional local and emerging Tasmanian women artists;

• Exhibiting high quality and emerging art to the Tasmanian public;

• Increasing awareness of culture, arts and gender issues within Tasmania; and

• Developing an extensive network of support for women’s art in Tasmania through partnerships and sponsors. 

New Direction

The Women’s Art Prize Tasmania is proud to announce an exciting new direction following its 20th anniversary. Moving forward, the Prize will be delivered biennially with a new Fellowship program being delivered in the alternate years.

Launching on International Women’s Day in 2023, the Fellowship program draws upon recent sector consultation highlighting the importance and need for targeted support. It is designed to support the professional and creative development of artists, arts workers and cultural practitioners. 

2023 Fellowship Overview

The Women’s Art Prize Tasmania Fellowship program aims to provide self-directed development opportunities for Tasmanian women artists of all art forms and career stages.

In 2023, delivered by RANT Arts and sponsored by Bell Bay Aluminium, three Fellowships are on offer: lutruwita, Emerging Practice and Creative Development.

These Fellowships build upon the Prizes mission to empower and build the capacity of women artists across the state. This new and exciting pilot program draws upon recent sector consultation highlighting the importance and need of targeted development support.

Applications open: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – Wednesday, 8th March, 2023,10:00am (AEDT).

Applications close: Sunday, 30th April, 2023, 11:59pm (AEST). 

Fellowship Objectives 

The objectives of the 2023 Fellowship program are:

• ·       Creative practice development;

• ·       Professional development and mentoring;

• ·       Networking and profile raising; and

• ·       Capacity building. 

Fellowship Categories

In 2023, there will be three $5,000 Fellowships awarded to women artists, cultural practitioners and arts workers of any artform, one from each of the following categories:

lutruwita: Dedicated Fellowship for an identified First Nations artist, cultural practitioner or cultural worker of any career stage.

Emerging Practice: A Fellowship for Emerging artists & arts workers (i.e. first 5 years of their practice).

Creative Development: A Fellowship for Established and Mid-career artists & arts workers.

Fellowship Key Dates 

·       Applications open: Wednesday, 8th March, 2023,10:00am (AEDT).

·       Applications close: Sunday, 30th April, 2023, 11:59pm (AEST).

·       Fellowship announcement: Friday, 30th June, 2023.

·       2023 Fellowships commence:  Saturday, 1st July, 2023. 

3.  Eligibility Criteria 

The following section outlines who is eligible to apply for the 2023 Fellowships and the types of activities that can be undertaken. 

Who is eligible to apply for the 2023 Fellowships?

 To be eligible you must:

• ·       be a Tasmanian resident (either citizens or those who have held permanent Australian resident status) who has held a Tasmanian residential address for at least 6 of the last 12 months in Tasmania preceding the Application Submission Closing date on Sunday 30 April 2023;

• ·       must identify as being female; and

• ·       be an individual with an active Australian Business Number (ABN) that is registered to your name and location.

RANT welcomes and encourages applicants who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

To be eligible for the lutruwita Fellowship, the applicant must identify as a First Nation’s woman artist, cultural practitioner and/or arts worker.

To be eligible for Emerging Practice Fellowship, the applicant must be in the first 5 years of their arts practice or new artform.

You are not eligible if you:

• ·       are not a non-Tasmanian resident;

• ·       do not identify as being female;

• ·       are an organisation;

• ·       are a group or collective; or

• ·       are an employee of RANT Arts or Bell Bay Aluminium.  

What the fellowship can be used for. 

• Professional development opportunities;

• Mentorships, coaching, workshops and training;

• Self-directed residencies; and/or

• Travel costs (including international). 

What the fellowship can not be used for:

• Delivery or administration of projects by organisations;

• Activities that have already commenced;

• Curriculum based activities including for primary, secondary or tertiary courses (i.e. universities, TAFE etc); and

• Infrastructure costs including building or fitting out permanent structures.  

Eligible locations 

Fellowship activities are not limited to a specific location, they may be undertaken locally, within Tasmania or outside of Tasmania.
